Essential Skills for Practitioners
Health and Safety courses in association with NZISM

EMA’s new suite of four new Essential Skills for Health and Safety Practitioners courses – delivered in association with New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM) – will enable you, as a health and safety practitioner, to add essential skills to your core technical competencies, cementing positive change in your industry.
These courses will help you to create a climate of trust and collaboration that will strengthen your relationships with key decision makers. They will show you how to recognise your own leadership style and lead with authenticity by holding to your professional values while engaging with, and empowering, followers. You will learn how to apply creative and critical thinking techniques to analyse challenges and generate imaginative and innovation solutions. You will also learn how to communicate the need for change in a way that engages and motivates others, and to lead a successful change management process.
We’ve developed these courses to enable you to deliver more for your business and gain deeper all-round skills, which is important as industries move to a more proactive preventative approach.
The four initial courses are aligned with 12 priorities identified in the International Network of Safety & Health Professional Organisations (INSHPO) Framework.

Influencing Skills for Health and Safety Professionals
Half Day Course
Technical skills are no longer enough for health and safety professionals to ensure work is done safely, and at the standard required. As a leader in health and safety, being aware of your own thought patterns and communication enables you to better influence the decisions and actions of others. This self-awareness will enable you to adapt your approach depending on the situation and the needs and desires of the individuals involved, thus increasing your level of influence.
This course will enable you to create a climate of trust and collaboration that will strengthen your relationships with key decision makers. By constructing an influence map and recognising and adapting your influencing style, you will be able to deliver your messages more confidently and persuasively, creating positive outcomes for all. By understanding what is important to others, you will be able to use positive influence to win long-term backing from important stakeholders by supporting them in the way they will appreciate most.
- Interact and network to develop relationships with operational staff and other stakeholders
- Use the principles of effective influencing to move beyond your default influencing style
- Map and grow your influence circles by becoming a trusted resource through establishing credibility and demonstrating reliability
- Provide advice and technically correct information on current OHS thinking that others can understand while empathising with the needs and perspectives of others and the organisational environment
- Use reciprocity within your networks to create positive relationships and widen your influence
- Gain upward influence in your organisation.
Creativity, Problem-Solving and Critical Thinking
Full Day Course
Creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking are what keeps businesses thriving and people safe in our current COVID-disrupted economy. These are thinking skills that provide a defence against stagnation in which innovative ideas and more efficient ways of working are not encouraged.
This course teaches you how to apply creative and critical thinking techniques to analyse a problem and generate imaginative and innovative solutions. It does so by showing you how to choose between a range of problem-solving processes and decision-making frameworks to select the best option. Learners will also gain the skills necessary to spot problems as they occur and involve others in the problem resolution process.
- Identify problem(s) by applying informal and structured strategies
- Apply a range of information gathering and analytical strategies to clarify the nature of the problem and underlying causes
- Generate imaginative and innovative solutions by applying creative thinking processes
- Evaluate potential solutions using a decision-making framework and consultative and critical thinking processes
- Determine a solution implementation strategy based on consultation and evaluation.
Authentic Leadership
Half Day Course
Leadership has changed. It is no longer enough to simply set sail and expect others to follow. Followership remains necessary to ensure the sails are full and trimmed, but is no longer a given.
This course will teach you how to recognise your own leadership style and lead with authenticity by holding to your professional values and engaging with and empowering followers.
- Identify your leadership style and the need for both further development and situational adaptation to enhance leadership capabilities
- Generate the respect of others and gain followers by being your real, authentic self
- Demonstrate assertiveness where needed in subtle, constructive ways, therefore maintaining followership when things get difficult
- Lead by setting an example and by demonstrating confidence, optimism, and interest in others, which, in turn, generates confidence in others.
Change Management
Half Day Course
Whether it be due to economic, societal, technological, environmental, or legal concerns one of the few constants in business, is change. Health and Safety leaders need to be able recognise when change is imperative and manage the change process to achieve universal buy-in and minimise disruption.
- Identify and clearly communicate the need for change, the benefits of change and potential change options
- Create a sharp vision to engage internal and external stakeholders in the process
- Provide support to stakeholders to make them comfortable and enable them to have ownership of the outcome and their learning journey
- Persevere with change over time and manage push back.
